Hello Ebi! Hello Fam!
As you know, Black History Month has arrived. What better time is there to list some of the best writers of color in the genres of Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Magical Realism. These are a combination of books I’ve read and others that I look forward to reading!
Nnedi Okorafor – You’ve read about this author in my earlier blog posts. But in case you haven’t, here are some of her works. Binti is book one of the Binti trilogy. Ms. Okorafor is the winner of both Hugo and Nebula Awards for best science fiction and fantasy works.
Hugo and Nebula Award winner Octavia E. Butler as you well know is my favorite sci-fi/fantasy novelist. (Thanks to Ms. Butler for putting me on my writerly path!) Aside from Wild Seed, I’ve also read and loved a number of her books. Here are a few:
N.K. Jemisin – Ms. Jemisin is a powerhouse writer and holds her ground among the above writers as another recipient of the Hugo and Nebula Awards. I’m currently reading The Fifth Season (so far, so good!) 😊. It is book one of The Broken Earth trilogy which consists of The Obelisk Gate and The Stone Sky.
Nalo Hopkinson – Who is of Jamaican descent like myself, is also the recipient of the Hugo and Nebula Awards for her works of fiction. I look forward to diving into her novels/collections soon.
I hope this post has introduced you to some new works of fiction. Perhaps, you’ll feel compelled to check them out. But don’t feel pressured if you don’t get to any of them this month. You have all year and beyond to discover these writers. If you’ve read any one of these books, I invite you to share your thoughts about them.
Happy Black History Month and Ibukun! (Blessings)
